The Crucible Theatre
The Crucible Theatre is Sheffield’s landmark with a reputation for unforgettable events and productions. Located on Norfolk Street, just a 5 minutes walk from our hotel, it hosts anything from big production, musicals, local performers and upcoming plays. However, it may be best known for hosting professional snooker’s most prestigious tournament, the World Snooker Championship, an event held since 1977.
It was built by M J Gleeson and opened in 1971. Known for its versatility, the opening performances ranged from music hall to children acting on improvised scenes to musical performances.
After winning the Barclays ‘Theatre of the Year Award’ in 2001, the theatre underwent a few refurbishments on between 2007 and late 2009.
The stage is surrounded by seats on each side, which gives the audience a very intimate relationship with what’s happening on stage. It seats 980 and it’s currently owned by Sheffield Theatre. Managed by very successful directors, Crucible Theatre also creates its productions, designing and rehearsing in-house.
Become immersed in a compelling drama or be among the first to see the next big thing. It’s an experience like no other, whether it’s high drama or action kicks! Watch the event of the year for snooker enthusiasts with the World Snooker Championship.
