The Lyceum Theatre
The Lyceum Theatre is next door to Crucible Theatre – located on Norfolk Street, just a 5 minutes walk from our hotel. It boasts of a hundred years of history, with magnificent plays and musicals. It serves as a venue for West End production as well as locally produced shows.
The theatre was originally built in 19897, however, its location had a few years of history. Previously, it was a theatre owned by music hall comedian Dan Leno, but after the lease ended, unfortunately the theatre burned down. Then City Theatre was built, however demolished six years later for the now Lyceum Theatre to take its place.
The uniqueness of Lyceum architecture makes this theatre even more attractive for locals and tourists. Built by W.G.R Sprague, with a traditional proscenium arch design, it is the only surviving theatre outside of London of the architect and also the last example of an Edwardian auditorium in Sheffield.
After surviving a threat of demolition (even though it was a Grade II listed building) and changing ownership a few times, the new owners received financial support from Sheffield City Council and the theatre was completely restored.
The Lyceum Theatre is also well known for hosting pantomime performances, starting way back in the 1940s. It now hosts its co-productions with Evolution pantomimes.
